First Frost

08 June 2012

Today was the first hard frost here. Everyone is talking about it and posting pictures and weather articles on Facebook. Here in Brazil, the cold is so unusual that the weather forecast actually includes "frost" as a daily forecast option - sunny, cloudy, partly cloudy, rainy, stormy, frosty! See the little frosty leaf?

It is a concern for the agricultural producers here. One of my students is a horticultural specialist for a large tobacco growing firm, and he said that they usually sow the next year's crop in May, so the seedlings are still very small and quite at risk right now. He said that he is already receiving calls from the farmers needing advice on the damage.

I took some photos just to prove that it actually happened, but they didn't come out very well. One area to the back of the garden had a large patch of frosty grass.
Close up of frost on a fallen leaf. Too bad I couldn't find one of those beautiful colored leaves with frost on it.
Out of focus, I will have to try this one again another day. Practice makes perfect.
