I was invited to visit a German home out in the countryside for Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake). We drove by car about an hour outside of Berlin, through gorgeous forested areas and later open farmland, both of which surprised me so close to such a large city.
Sitting down to Kaffee and Kuchen. Apparently this is quite the common visiting tradition; it boggles the mind that they are not fat as houses! Everyone ate an astonishing amount of cake, ice cream and other sweets, in addition to a little champagne, coffee, and later, tea.
The gentleman who owns the home has this lovely outdoor fireplace which is actually a fancy version of a barbecue grill. As you can see, we were just using it for warmth on this chilly spring evening.

The landscape looks much like farmland back home...
There is a lot of wind farming in Germany, but only a few windmills in each location (privately owned?) rather than huge wind farms like we have in California.
The tiny villages in this area, which due to their proximity to Berlin, seem to be made up of a combination of old farms and new homes for Berlin commuters/retirees.
