Rio de Janeiro, Day 3, Tour - Floresta da Tijuca

23 December 2011

Floresta da Tijuca.  This area used to be plantations but has now been allowed to revert to a natural state for about 50 years.  There are some exisiting residences there but no new ones are permitted.

A plantation house.  Behind it is a waterfall.
A map of the forest, hand painted on ceramic tiles.
Doesn't look like much, but it's the first cofee tree I have ever seen!

Look, baby bananas!

This is the "Brazil Tree", or a replacement of it.  The Brazil Tree is a type of tree that was prized in early times for shipbuilding.
A fountain behind the Brazil Tree.  Love the mosaic tile.
